wow.
reading through all your "phattyprops", leaves me speechless. I finally got the postcard notifying me about it last monday and have been blown away since by all your words, stories, and praises. I don't deserve any of them! I wouldn't be the person I am without knowing and learning from the dope people that is YOU!
It's taken me this long to try to formulate a proper thank you because, like steph knows, I'm not good at handling praise. Reading through the blog, I experience a little bit of embarrassment, along with the joy & sadness: "Why did all you guys waste time out of your day to write something about me, you know you got something better to do!"
If it had been a phattyroast, I woulda had hella responsive word for yall. I'm so used to being on the defensive, growing up in Houston with rich white folks AND rich Asian folks...always ready to come back at the next insult or racist shit folks come up with...
Anyway, I want to give special recognition to Steph and Paloma, who orchestrated this. I KNEW something was up when Paloma kept asking to see my address book, and Steph wanted to be e-vited to the bonfire. "E-vited?! WHY? You already know about it!" Sorry Paloma for refusing to send you the contacts at first!
So, thank you, from the bottom of my heart. There is a home and an EXTREMELY comfortable corner couch for yall if ever you come to LA (see my blog: www.djphatrick.com)

milhouse and fat qbert

man...i tried looking for a picture of us at cal but i guess we never took any. haha. i have to say tho phatty that u were a big part of my djing career...from music influence to youth outreach to drunken djing to successfully teaching the art of djing to many many many cal students. those were some good times. remember when i would call u milhouse and u would call me fat qbert and we would get hella annoyed of each other? hahaha. remember when i brought nasty ass alcohol to our djing 101 final and no one wanted to drink it? hahaha. and of course i cant forget the both of us getting hammered and playing that congo drum in front of blakes while freestyling with the homeless folks. haha. but yeah mayn....thanks for always hookin it up with gigs at cal...i never got the chance to thank you. you helped me so much in introducing me to a lot of key people over there but you really couldnt help it tho cause you were just so popular and i was like your fat sidekick. oh yeah....and you introduced me to one of my favorite japanese late night restaurants/bars: namu bar. ive eaten and gotten drunk there several times since the last time i saw you there. so with all this said mr. dj mutha fuckin phatrick......thanks for being a close homie and may u conquer LA like u did the bay. holla at me sometime.
-rygar
-remember when we were driving back from a gig and mike wanted me to drive into ur driveway hella fast and we ended up rear ending your neighbor's parked car (sorry to the neighbor if they read this)?

//Keep it movin..
Phat-
I got mad love for you. Always humble, always upbeat. Got integrity in music and in the heart. I'm glad we got to collaborate... you know that the night we had you guys as guests at Good Life (Wednesdays at Luka's 2004-2006) that was the night I met Z in person? And of course, I'll never forget the Sade Tribute at Devil's Pie. Gotta say, you made a dollar out of 15 cents with that night, I'm honored to be a part of it in documented form. Just goes to show that a little love and soul goes a long way. Much respect, hold it down in LaLaLand. Don't sweat it, change is the only constant. The right path always finds you. Keep in touch. Peace.

that self-hatred.
man, phatty. if i could get a yuan for every time you started a sentence off with "maybe it's just self hatred, but asians..."
i think many of us think back to the time when we were living in texas, flipping through manga comics at the tapioca cafe with our dyed bangs and extra baggy nautica jeans, and die a little inside.
but phatty, know that even if you hate asians, asians love you. who else is more fit to handle the awkward situation of trying to teach a hip-hop workshop to a group of oakland chinatown kids who only listen to anime soundtracks?
well, i know you're moving to LA because you thought that there are hardly any asians out there, but i have news for you: there are a few. but if it's any consolation, there are still other places in this world that have more (i.e. asia).

IF YOU WERE A PROSTITUTE, I BET YOU WOULD TURN A PHAT TRICK

P.S. Please come visit me in the O.C. We can have a slumber party. I promise to bring you milk and warm cookies.
Snowboarding Buddy!
Phatty, we will always have Tahoe! Don't worry, the pictures are hidden in a ditch somewhere in Tahiti.
Good luck in LA! Hopefully we'll see you more often. We're only 4 hours away.
Tahoe Part Deux?
Love you!

phattyphat...my friend....
moving from la to the bay, i was nervous. being a new dj in the city, i thought i would get eaten up alive from all the stories i've heard of the sf dj scene. then i meet phatrick. he was/is the nicest, most humble guy i've met here in the bay. he made me feel so welcome and helped me out so much. i owe him my life...or at least a rare lonnie jordan record! :) he is one of the few dj's i know who still flip shit and break new music. he takes the time to educate the masses, and does it all with style and grace.
so sad to see him go...but i know he'll conquer LA.
patrick, i wish you the best fam...please let me know if i can help in any way. mad love for you homie!!

I keep telling myself that you are ONLY moving to LA. That's an hour flight, 5-hour drive, or one miserable 9 hour greyhound trip away, sitting next to some stank dude with a leaking eye pointed straight at me.
and you moving to LaLa shows such an commendable commitment not only to the lovely Steph, but also to your talents and creative path. More power to you lil brother.
It's just that you will no longer be a simple text, skate, walk, bike or call away. I won't be able to googlechat your ass while you sit two feet away from me, and be grossed out by your kombucha addiction. or have you come over to exploit our technical resources (and outsource design jobs only to not credit me properly), or feed you something pretty and tasty that i just cooked up, with just a phonecall. i will miss having you on my short roster of semi-reliable, fully-respectable but under-employed homies with hours as bizarre and flexible/spontaneous as my own.
i will miss the enlightening conversations, the shit talking, the gossiping, the nerding out. and all the ridesharing, from the time i hitched a ride with you and that annoying dude at apature, to the times i was your dj transportation, to all the sojourns to luka's, goldenbull, poleng, etc etc etc. you have been so good to me, even when you've been mean.
i will miss all the dim sum, shandong, 上海小 吃, burritos, whole foods, champa garden sharing, tofu-loving, and your omnipresence at art nite with the eerie light of your laptop making your uni-bomber clad, babyass face glow.
oh boo.
i will miss all the opportunities for either of us to flake on the other (i guess we can still do that though).
i will even miss you boasting of your ill-perceived relative youthfulness, and of the "1/2 generation gap" between us.
i heart you p'doo doo!
you give me hope that there are decent chinese-y men out here, who i am not directly related to. if i did such things, and circumstances god forbid warranted it, i would kill for you, cuzzo.
have an amazing journey in LaLaLand with yo awesome lady and the thriving music scene and downass organizers, teachers, movers and bootyshakers in my hometown. I have yet another reason to make the drive down now. and i echo kiwi in asserting that LA is bout to receive a most ridonkulous blessing with your transplantation there.
can't wait to introduce you to some of the best burritos (stuffed with chile relleno), and veggie food down there. and hit up monterey park with you. haha.
i am too lazy to scan photos, so i leave you with this instead. hahahahahahahahah

top to bottom:
1. theatre rice banquet, your 21st birthday too. we all played hide and seek around the palace of fine arts, and ate twinkies and chicken and waffles...
2. last year, mission, san francisco, i think we watched superbad.
3. you singing bob marley on sproul, i think this is one of my favorite berkeley memories: just the hanging out in the sun, the water fountain, the people passing by, the plastic chairs, the vietnamese sandwiches and horchatas, the asphalt, the reunions, the steps in the shade, the flyers, the phone numbers ball-point penned onto your hand, the avocado sushi, the sing a longs, the jokes, the flash photography, and the talk, a lot of the talk, dialogue with no beginnings or ends, just go on, and on and on and on and on...

Thanks for everything, Phatty-Phat-Phat.
What's up Pat. Phat. Phatty.
I have to say that I'm really going to miss you, and that you are one of the few great people in the Bay that I really, really...i mean really...hella get along with. It's just too bad that we only started kickin it more this past year. I remember back in the day where I used to hire you and Kiwi for our AYPAL block parties and rallies, and the youth thought you looked like Dario. HA!
Here's some other random memories for your scrapbook. Enjoy.

Our wasabi eating context. You got 2nd place. Here you are, next to your ribbon and your wasabi on a piece of nori (seaweed).

Our weekly Monday Night Art nights...with a homemade Joy Liu dinner and some music...art making, and a lot of artists nerding out in our living room. This includes laptop-music-making and some scrabble playing. Oh yeah, and some tu-tu making.

AYPAL Winter Snow Trip Social 2008 -- Thanks for being our guest Emcee and Judge for the open mic teams. Remember the snow fight in front of the hotel, the lip-synching contest, and the sledding the next day...

And of course, camping with AYPAL OASES at Del Valle in Livermore. Ohhh mang, too many good times...Remember that dinner we had to do in the dark? You guys were HELLA proud of your gourmet menu of rice, ribs, grilled vegetables and corn. And of course the non-stop SPOONS games with some rowdy-ass truth or dare consequences...I remember watching y'all play that game in the lake where you had to tag the person in the middle of the circle...you were "it" so you went under the water and tried to tag someone by getting through Hai's legs, but your head got stuck between his knee caps -- "It felt like Hai was giving birth to me." Alan getting "errock-tic" with everyone in the lake, and I told you that I think I mighta farted on your neck during a game of "chicken" in the water. HA!

ANYWAY, I wish you the best of luck in LA because you're gonna need it, SUCKA! Go ahead and raise some kids in LA, or should I say San Gabriel or Monterey Park! I hope you have a good time in that suburban-sprawl punk-ass hollywood-ass glamour piece of shiet city that's going to turn into an apocalyptic desert when the water wars hit the world.
Just kidding.
Anyway. I really do wish you the best, and know that you always have a couch or two to sleep on when you come back to the bay. I appreciate our long, good talks about music...about bay folks, or whatevas...men who get out of prison and write essays on Craiglist.org. Like I said, the best folks to kick it with are the ones that you can do anything with...you don't need to have an organized 'event' or dinner to facilitate the conversation...you can just be kickin it in the same space, chillin and talking about whatever comes to mind. I was trying to think back to how we got to be folks like that and I couldn't even remember because it just happened. Being friends with you just seemed like a natural progression of sorts. I appreciate that about you.
Just know that I truly believe that you're hella talented, down-to-earth, and just good peoples. Your passion for music and for working with youth in Oakland just inspires everyone else to just DO more and excel in whatever they take on. You do a lot. You're hella giving. You're a good friend. You're the fuckin bomb. We're really gonna miss you in the Yay.
And I know you' ll make the trek back to the Bay once in a while to visit, so come back for another art night sesh whenever you hit Oakland. I'll make sure to hit you up when I make my bi-annual trip down to Lala. You can help me practice my Mandarin (lack of) skills.
Oh yeah. Shanghai Xiao Chi! We gotta go back.
We love Phatty.
Peace homie.
XOxo,
Tiffany

Blud…Phatty is a God amongst insects. I haven’t known you for hella long, but I have a stupendous amount of respect for you and what you are trying to accomplish with your talents and intelligence. From your fresh ta def selektah grooves to your politics, I see in you someone I can call an ally in a country/world, hell-bent on individuality, selfishness and escaping from oppression, by turning into an oppressor. You are someone who refuses the labels Amerika puts on us as Asian Pacific Amerikans, and speaks to and for us through your music and voice on public radio. You deny neither your privilege nor your oppression and are an inspiration to young people of color, as a young adult elder and an educator. Not unlike Baron Davis, you are leaving us for the glamour and glitz of the City of Angels. =P I’m not mad at either of you, and will continue to love and respect ya’ll like its mah got-dam job. I appreciate deeply, the love & support you’ve shown for my/Jeimil’s art, from hosting us on the radio show to throwing us on “Asian American Hip-Hop for Dummies." I really wish we coulda had more convos about race, class, gender, hip-hop and the war-torn, beautiful, ugly, utopia of a calamitous world that we live in, but all this means is that I’ma have yet another reason to make road trips down to SoCal (I got a ton of friends down there who complain that I never visit them). I wish you nothing but the best in your LAdventures and know that our paths will cross again (hopefully sooner rather than later). Thank you again for DJing me n Em’s wedding reception and I am super sorry that your radio was stolen =(. I hope our union isn’t forever tied to the memory of this theft in the future. =T
You are a King homie. Don’t let any1 tell you different and if they do, tell ’em like that boy Beau Sia say: “Asian men are hung like horses.” 'Yee' ^ 1800. You can take Phatty out tha Bay but... (you know the rest cuzcuz).
Peace & a plethora of blessings in your journey DJ Phatrick.
Your brother in arms,
Colin ‘senbei’ Ehara
I heart my Phatty Boom!

My Dearest Phatty Boom.
You already know how devastated I am that you are leaving the Bay. I'm still in denial. I still remember when you'd run Lake Merritt with your mohawk, and I swear I thought you were way too cool for school. Definitely too cool for me. Then lo and behold, here we are, and I am apparently just the right amount of cool because we've become family. You're like a brother to me, Phatty! And I'm not just saying that. The are a lot of folks who I'm cool with, but you're my Top 5! Even though you were number 16 in my speed dial. But you know. Top 5 in my heart and Top 16 in my phone is a pretty good deal.
Thank you for being a part of my world. You've taught me to love the Bay more than I already do. You've even let me live in your house while you were gone! Thank you for being an example of a cool ass Chinese- pretty buoyant, baby. I think you're probably the only person I'll excuse for wearing New Balances (laced up tight, mind you) every single day, probably not excluding wedding season. I love you that much, Phatty Boom. hahah Jk.
And you know something. You're an incredible musician, and I hope you know that. I jock the PBS joints hella hard, as well as my Namu mixtapes, which, well...you don't really mix those, but Namu = Phatty, so you get my drift.
I love you immense Phatty! I'll miss you so much, it'll make me frown from time to time thinking about what the Bay would be like without you. Please talk to me on GChat while you're in LA. Update me, call me, see us up here regularly!
PS. Phatty the Fam! You're so lucky I'm not corny enough to call you Kuya. muahahaha

See You in LA!

Jesus, everyone's throwing around words like "career move" and "marriage" and "retirement plans." What the fuck people? What happened to eviction parties and 40 oz for breakfast? Pho Ga for four, Karaoke, and lazy aerosol filled Sundays at the Bulb? Hmmm, actually I guess we don't do any of that anymore. We mostly touch base on gchat trading internet Rap nerd chatter which we rehash during my occasional visit to your gigs. I suppose not much will change now that you will be taking the show to LA. That said, you will be missed and I wish you much success and luck down south homie. So... how's about that T.I. ft. Jigga, Ye and Weezy track "Swagger Like Us"? Yay, nay? Art? Not art?

Maaaaan. It's not really up for debate how much gratitude I have for you and your guidance while I was at Cal. Like everything other folks have pointed out, you did it all in a way that was informative and inspiring. Community building and party rocking and hater destroying nonstop. You're one who commands the utmost respect and admiration for your dedication to goodness. Despite all the stories about how much of a hard ass you were when I first became part of the fold, I saw quickly that it was only cause you were really on it.
Anyway, I just know that I would not be wherever the hell I am today if I hadn't met you and SFHH. So Thanks, respect, and let's make some noise in LA.
Road Trips!!
PART II
The road trip to LA/San Diego in October 07, with you and Dat is hands down one of the most memorable moments with you...

Don't be surprised if you get a gift in the mailbox at your new address ;) muahahaha!
Dat and I will be high five~wave~no jive'n every DP in your honor...

Phatty Boom-shaka-laka
Dear Patrick Huang,
Let me just say it while you still technically live in the Bay.... DON'T LEAVE!!! You're making the biggest mistake in your entire LIFE! Trust meeee!!!!!!
In all seriousness though, Phatty, you've been my partner in many meaningful, meaningful things. From Apex Express to LIBRE to being EVERYONE's DJ/hypeman/soundman/etc... From rope jumping in that cold-ass lake near Alomare Falls to all kinds of random food excursions to singing along to Smashing Pumpkins on the I-5... From difficult conversations to dealing with wack sound systems to flat tires in Bakersfield... You speak with honesty, you work with integrity, you sacrifice with selflessness. You answer obnoxious song requests with a smile. Your value to the community trancends the DJ booth, it echoes in the lyrics of Oakland's up-and-coming young artists, it lives in the memories of those who are fortunate enough to call you their friend.
I know it doesn't end here. The Bay will obviously miss you, but L.A will receive a wonderful new gift. And that's a good thing.
Libre,
Kiwi

My Phatty Pie...
PART I
where do i start...?! Patrick ( i never call you that...lol), ever since i met you i knew you were special, and more so, i think my instincts told me that you would be a very important person in my life. Sometimes I think you're one of my guardian angels, cause you have been there for me through some very critical moments in my life these past few years...
When I found out we were cousins, it was seriously one of the most exciting moments of 07, cause you're such a good person, and everyone loves you! and now I can call you family, and not cause you're "fam", but cause you're FAMILY :) I also felt it was my duty to watch out for you here in the Bay, since your parents, and brother, and Steph, are so far away (i'm such a mom!)... I'm really excited for your new adventure in LA, don't stress out in traffic!! you should start smoking more weed, lol! In all honesty, The Bay is too small for the person you have grown to become, and it won't be long till I join you out there ;) so make sure you get all the connects ready for me!
I love you phatty! thank you for bringing sunshine into my life, for teaching me about music, for testing me, for loving me, and believing in me, and making sure stupid ass fuckers stay far away...

Memories

Hey Phatrick,
Although I saw you twice this year, and I use to see you quite often. I'm thinking I won't see you for some time. So, I will plan to visit you in L.A. You are making a BIG move and leaving the BAY. I'm sure everyone will miss you. I will because whenever I go to your gigs you always make me feel welcome and special even though it's been so long. I may never be as brave as you and move from the bay. Come back (with Steph).
Back to memory lane: Remember the Halloween party, Tad was in camo, Sheng was apart of the Scoobies, I think that was at your place. Going to S4HH meetings. Getting your first tattoo. Being in Rice, helping out rice and storming out on one of the mock shows, just sitting on Sproul, Ling Chi, Asian Am. and Ethnic Studies classes, OASES, after OASES getting Vietnamese sandwiches, your VW.
I'm glad I was able to meet Steph separate from you and as a coworker. Cuz I felt close to both of you in different ways, not as a couple. I think you two are great together and I'm going to be sad that you won't be here anymore. You'll be a little further away, but I think it's for the best because you both should be closer to each other and Steph deserves it.
Those people in L.A. are sure lucky to have you, while people in the bay will miss you and have to travel to see you. Best of lucky Phatty.
To: Phatty
Dearest Phatty,
Funny to think that now that I live here, and y'all convinced to revisit the possibility of the Bay being my home, that I now have to say goodbye to you.
My time with you, your help in my research process for my senior thesis were gigantic influences on me at that time and on my relationship with the Bay...and by this I really actually mean by relationship with West Coast hip hop, the notion of 'chilling,' Asian-American made and bred hip hop especially, etc. These are not just characteristics of the Bay, but things I have long loved and struggled with as a San Francisco-born woman. Identity is all up in that mess, yada yada.
Long story short your realness greatly contributed to my ability to see and hear what the Bay was trying to say to me, what it was telling me it could offer. After plans to move to Brooklyn after college, when I made the choice to leave New York and come out here - I was worried, but all in all I have had no regrets.
Phatty, you are a very high calibre of hip hop head, friend, man, and brotha and if anyone questions that, they can check your actions. And if they still got beef, they can come talk to me.
May you find much happiness in LA, along with lessons and challenges. And if anybody fucks with you, I, along with all these other people on here, will be happy to back you up/hold your jacket while you fuck them up/hand you a baseball bat.
Your friend,

and you could tell that the east bay was his home
Yo Patrick - when I gave up the turntables a couple of years ago, I did so knowing that the world-of-spreading-good-music was in good hands. I knew that there were better skilled, more gifted, more dedicated and better technicians who I could never be as good as. DJ Phatrick being one of those. Sharing the decks was a pleasure, we were lucky to run the same circle of DJ buddies who all magnetized towards each other at Cal. It was neat seeing all of these different DJ's, with their different sounds, their different killer records and now, somehow, Patrick has embodied the sounds of all of those places, people and experiences. I hope that you will always consider the Bay Area your home and I wish you all the best in LA!

To the Bay Area's Phat-est
Damn Phat-
What to say and where to start? It has been great and will be amazing, there is not doubt that you will turn out LA...you already have I'm sure. We both did a lot of growing up these past 4 years, I am blessed to be a friend of yours. I told you once before and I will tell you again- you are a great person and a great DJ, don't let anyone tell you different. Do you,and don't be afraid to succeed!
I really don't know what I am going to do for my next backyard boogie or birthday bash...I guess download all the Devil's Pie tributes and play those...And I am so serious, it aint no thang to shoot down to LA, just keep me posted and a sista will be down there to party-I am not playing. And you will DJ my 30th birthday, I plan on renting out whatever spot you will be DJing at that night and my wedding reception...whenever that will be.
Keep reppin' the Bay, you have made such an impact here-Yeah, loosen up LA with that Bay Area appeal. You will be missed-we love you much, we always got your back.
Don't be too much of a stranger, although I know you will-You wouldn't be Patrick if you didn't :)
Peace and Many Blessing
Much Love and Much Respect
P.S. If you need help starting up Youth Sounds LA, I'm there!

to eight years of love, music, and community
my dearest phatty boom dj phatrick honey buns,
wow. i don't quite know where to start, since i should (and i am) the happiest little woman for knowing that you will be closer to me after three years of long distance...
BUT
i know it's gonna be hard for you (and even me) to know that you'll be leavin your stompin ground, your home, after eight years of building yourself and your values; developing life-long relationships with good folks, organizers, hip hop and music heads, dj's, educators, youth; and all the while blessing everybody with your genuine honesty, generosity, and love for the people.
and i can honestly say that the person and the teacher i am today, with my constant need to develop student voice and to bring in music and culture in the classroom, while connecting curriculum to the struggles outside, and still havin a good ass time -- YOU helped teach me that. through your work cultivating young musicians, your ability to bring the party to the struggle, and your constant critical eye -- you may not be a classroom teacher, but i think you've certainly taught me, and a whole lot of other folks, what it means to build community and create change.
with the bay area being the beautiful place that it is, and you being the beautiful person that you are, i am eternally grateful for having and knowing both at such a pivotal time in my life. i am sad because i think your moving marks an end of a whole era in your/our lives. after all, we met in the bay and "grew up" in the bay. but i'm also excited cuz it marks an exciting new beginning for you, for me, and for us...
so, thank you. and i love you holmes! and now it's L.A's turn to be blessed! yeeeeeee!
